If two products contain a peptide with the same name, are they automatically the same product?

Not necessarily. Naturally occurring peptides are produced within the body and help regulate processes such as appetite, growth, immunity and tissue repair. Synthetic peptides are manufactured to reproduce or modify a biological sequence. Some become approved medicines after extensive testing for identity, strength, safety and effectiveness.

Compounded peptide products occupy a different category. A licensed professional may compound a medication to meet a specific patient’s needs when an appropriate approved product cannot do so—for example, by removing an allergen or preparing a different dosage form. Compounding can serve a legitimate medical purpose, but compounded drugs are not FDA-approved or reviewed before marketing in the same way as approved medicines.

Research chemicals create greater uncertainty. Products labelled “for research use only” are not authorized as human treatments, and their identity, purity, sterility and strength may be difficult for consumers to verify.

The source matters because a peptide’s name tells only part of the story. Manufacturing standards, testing, storage, delivery method and professional oversight can determine whether the final product is consistent—or potentially dangerous.

In the peptide world, “what is it?” should always be followed by “who made it, how was it tested and what evidence supports this version?”
