If two products contain a peptide with the same name, are they automatically the same product?

Not necessarily. Naturally occurring peptides are produced within the body and help regulate functions such as appetite, growth, immunity and tissue repair. Synthetic peptides are manufactured to reproduce or modify biological sequences. Some eventually become approved medicines after extensive testing for identity, strength, safety and effectiveness.

Compounded peptides belong to a different category. A licensed professional may prepare a customized medication when an appropriate approved product cannot meet a patient’s specific needs—for example, by removing an allergen or providing an alternative dosage form.

Compounding can serve an important medical purpose, but compounded drugs are not approved or reviewed before marketing in the same way as approved medicines. Poor manufacturing practices may result in contamination or incorrect amounts of an active ingredient.

Research chemicals introduce even greater uncertainty. Products marked “for research use only” are not authorized as human treatments, and consumers may find it difficult to verify their identity, purity, sterility or strength.

The source matters because a peptide’s name tells only part of its story. Manufacturing standards, independent testing, storage, delivery method and professional oversight can determine whether the final product is consistent—or potentially unsafe.

In the peptide world, “What is it?” should always be followed by “Who made it, how was it tested and what evidence supports this version?”
